Char-ron Dorsey, a standout lineman for the championship teams of Bolles School and later Florida State University, passed away on Monday night at the age of 46. His death was due to complications from a stroke, following a lengthy and successful coaching tenure in Jacksonville.
Dorsey made his mark as an offensive tackle in the NFL playing for both the Dallas Cowboys and the Houston Texans. Before his professional career, Dorsey showcased his talent at Florida State University, playing for the Florida State Seminoles, and was eventually drafted by the Cowboys in the seventh round of the 2001 NFL draft.
Michael Holloway, the head coach of football and track at Parker, who served as Dorsey’s assistant for nearly two decades at both middle and high school levels, confirmed his passing to the Times-Union.

“He’s had an impact on so many kids that have had the opportunity to make it to the next level,” said Holloway. “I remember Coach Bobby Bowden came out here to watch him play for Bolles basketball, because he heard he had great feet.”
Dorsey’s early years were spent at Bolles School, where he excelled as a defensive tackle and earned three-time first-team Class 4A All-State selection. His athleticism was not limited to football; he also played as a power forward in basketball. At Florida State University, he began his college career as a defensive tackle but was converted into an offensive tackle during his sophomore year.
His professional journey began with the Dallas Cowboys, where despite a challenging start and issues with maintaining his playing weight, he managed to start the last two games of the season at right tackle.
However, his tenure with the Cowboys was short-lived as he was waived in 2002 due to his ongoing weight problems. Dorsey’s NFL journey continued briefly with the Houston Texans and later the New York Giants, though his time with the Giants was marred by injury.
Beyond the NFL, Dorsey contributed to his community as a football coach, first at Matthew Gilbert Middle School and then at Andrew Jackson High School in Jacksonville. His commitment extended to serving as a security guard and a football coach for the Mentors of Tomorrow Cowboys in Jacksonville, Florida.
