A surprising state is rejecting pleas, including from the state’s lieutenant governor, to remove Donald Trump from the 2024 ballot.

The list of candidates was certified by Secretary of State Shirley Weber.

Fox News reported:

California voters will have the option to select former President Trump in the 2024 GOP presidential primary despite calls from the state’s lieutenant governor to remove him from the ballot.

Secretary of State Shirley Weber certified the list of candidates Thursday night.

The decision from the Golden State came hours after Maine’s secretary of state disqualified the GOP front-runner from the ballot – a move that comes in the wake of a similar ruling from the Colorado Supreme Court.

The divided court ruled that Trump is ineligible to run for the presidency under the U.S. Constitution’s insurrection clause, arguing that his actions fueled the deadly Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol by right-wing protesters aiming to disrupt congressional certification of President Biden’s 2020 election victory.

Governor Gavin Newsom previously said, “There is no doubt that Donald Trump is a threat to our liberties and even to our democracy but in California, we defeat candidates at the polls. Everything else is a political distraction.”

Politico reported:

Gov. Gavin Newsom has a message for California politicians eager to follow Colorado’s lead to block former President Donald Trump from the ballot: Cool your jets.

The Colorado Supreme Court ruled this week that Trump was ineligible to run for president because he fomented the Jan. 6 insurrection. The decision breathed life into efforts across the country, including in California, to disqualify the former president for violating the 14th Amendment.

But in a Friday afternoon statement, Newsom telegraphed to his fellow California Democrats not to get ahead of the U.S. Supreme Court, which will almost certainly be the final arbiter of that decision.

“There is no doubt that Donald Trump is a threat to our liberties and even to our democracy,” Newsom said, “but in California, we defeat candidates at the polls. Everything else is a political distraction.”
