Leftist infighting broke out in the Netherlands on Sunday after climate activist Greta Thunberg invited Muslim refugees on the stage and spoke about the conflict in Israel. This irritated one protester, who hopped on stage and grabbed the microphone from Thunberg.
Thunberg was speaking to a sizable rally crowd in the Dutch capital of Amsterdam when she invited the women to speak. “As a climate justice movement, we have to listen to the voices of those who are being oppressed and those who are fighting for freedom and for justice. Otherwise, there can be no climate justice without international solidarity,” Thunberg said.
After the Palestinian and Afghan refugees spoke, a man came onto the stage and attempted to grab the microphone from Thunberg. “I have come here for a climate demonstration, not a political view,” the man said before a group of rallygoers started to usher him away.
“Calm down, ” Thunberg said after a brief pause. Once the man was off the stage, Thunberg led the crowd in chants of “no climate justice on occupied land!”
Organizers claimed that roughly 70,000 people attended the Amsterdam climate rally, describing it as the largest such rally in the history of the Netherlands.
Other speakers included a number of political leaders, including former European Union climate chief Frans Timmermans. “We live in a time of crises, all of which are the result of the political choices that have been made. It has to be done and it can be done differently,” event organizer Climate Crisis Coalition said in a statement.
